| Greg Mortenson is a bestselling memoirist who is under fire for embellishing his story. The CBS News program 60 Minutes has completed a feature on Mortenson and his charity. It is a cautionary tale for those writers who are contemplating writing their stories.
In the last few years memoirs by authors like James Fry and Margret Seltzer have been proved to be fraudulent.
Memoirs are often referred to as creative non-fiction because they rely on the memory of the writer and rarely are fact checked or sourced. There is a fine line between fact and fiction. A memoir must be considered factual, and much fiction is autobiographical. Literature often blurs the lines.
